Dinner at Charlton House, the Boutique Country House Hotel in Somerset

Had dinner at Charlton House last week. This is the ever so stylish boutique country house hotel in Somerset owned by Roger and Monty Saul. Roger Saul was the founder of the international designer brand, Mulberry, and he designed the interiors of this fabulous hotel. Our arrival was so welcoming, it was as though we were arriving at a dinner party of close friends. We relaxed into the comfiest sofas , covered as you might expect in Mulberry fabrics. Our drinks order was taken and the drinks served in the most courteous professional manner.

However, it was dinner that was the highlight of the evening. How often do you visit a restaurant and overhear someone say, ‘I keep looking forward to the next mouthful.’ We were in the conservatory next to a large window; we felt as though we were almost in the garden, so close were the trees and the lawns. It was a cool evening, so we could have been quite cold if it wasn’t for the underfloor heating. The stone floor was lovely and warm so we kicked off our shoes and enjoyed dinner with the warmth creeping up our legs! It was wonderful. As the light faded, so the candle light reflected in the windows of the conservatory adding a romantic air to the occasion.

Then there was the food. I shan’t go into detail here but suffice to say it to say that my venison was legendary. My wife, whose appetite is tiny, had finished her fish before she realised it.

Coffee swathed in more Mulberry fabrics and we were in heaven.

Make no mistake, this is a superb hotel. A country house hotel that benefits from creative panache. We’ll be back.
